Who is responsible for the buildings of Parliament? The Sergeant- at-Arms is the person who is responsible for the Parliament Buildings, their contents, maintenance and security. The Sergeant- at-Arms attends to the Speaker when he or she enters or leaves the Commons Chamber, and is responsible for the safekeeping of the Mace. The mace is a decorated rod carried as a symbol of Parliamentary authority. Carrying the Mace, the Sergeant-at-Arms escorts the Speaker and the Clerks upon their entry into and departure from the Chamber.
